Indoor Cricket USA - League: Match Report

MUMBAI XPRESS AND GALAXY IN HISTORIC INDOOR CRICKET TIE MATCH

Reporting for Indoor Cricket USA from
Morristown, New Jersey- A Cricket Pundit.

On Sunday 21st. December, the exciting Mumbai Cricket Team and the talented Galaxy Cricket Club produced the thrills, the entertainment and the overall splendor of the cricket game in one of the preliminary matches of  Indoor Cricket USA’s 2008 annual tournament at its Cricketer’s Paradise, in Morristown, New Jersey.

The Cricket Lovers, who, undaunted by the Snow, Sleet and Slush, assembled at the venue to witness the match, were given a memorable treat. The mentally fit and fast learning Mumbai Xpress team, which is making its debut in this form of the game were indeed worthy opponents for ICUSA’s 2001 semi-finalists of the inaugural Indoor Cricket Tournament. This game was very exciting, and went down to the wire. Its spectacular nature earned the admiration of those who witnessed it. Many praised the entertainment provided by the teams which combined to create a model of excellence in tactics, strategies, decency, dignity, discipline and overall decorum that set a standard to be emulated with pride by all those who regard the game of cricket as a ‘gentleman’s game.”

Galaxy’s captain Krishna called correctly at the toss and opted to bat. The skipper, leading from the front, opened the innings with Ryan Gulvary as his partner. The pair put on 34 runs in their allotted overs. Conrad Carbon and Rana Prataap Naraine, stalwarts of ICUSA’s 2004 “Shield” winning team at the Durham World Club Cricket Festival in the U.K., then paired off in the middle of the innings to take the score to 76, before Udesh and Manoj rounded off the innings with an abundance of physical energies, which was mellowed by an assortment of mental energies by the boys of Mumbai Xpress whose efforts resulted in two dismissals in that period of play and thereby reduced the total to a gettable one. Galaxy’s innings closed at 92, with Krishna, at the top of the order scoring 19 not out from 15 deliveries at a very good strike rate of 126.67 and Rana, in the middle contributing a cameo 17 not out from 12 deliveries at a strike rate of 141.67. Bowling for Mumbai Xpress, Amit and Salil were superb. The former giving away a miserly 3 runs at an economy rate of 1.50 and taking 2 wickets in his allotted overs, while the latter give up 9 runs at the rate of 4.50 and captured  1 wicket. Punit who conceded 25 runs was the weak link in the bowling attack. There were 15 wides, which accounted for 30 runs. Galaxy’s innings had 4 dismissals which reduced the total by 20 runs as the mental attributes of Mumbai prevailed over the youthful physical fitness and energies of  Galaxy.

Indoor Cricket Quote

Mumbai Xpress opened with Salil and Nehal who scored 12 and 19 respectively at strike rates of 100 and 158.33. That pair departed with the score at 33. The next pair of Punit and Amit built on the solid foundation of the openers, taking the score to 75, with Punit making 12 and Amit 15 at strike rates of 100 and 125 respectively. As the last pair of the Mumbai batting machine came to the crease the Galaxy think tank led by its captain Krishna, the experienced Udesh and the veterans Rana and Carbon got into motion to restrict runs and build up pressure as the Mumbai guys were in comfortable cruise control mode for victory. In a remarkable piece of tense and intriguing cricket runs dried up with bowlers and fielders displaying passionate commitment restricted Vishrut Pathak to 4 runs and Ankit to 6 from 12 deliveries each at strike rates of 33.33 and 50.00 respectively. In the last over Mumbai needed 2 runs to tie and 3 to win from the potential 6 deliveries with the high probability of the ever present wides to add to the score. Manoj was entrusted to bowl that over. He gave away only 2 runs, in the best over ever bowled, since the annual ICUSA annual Indoor Cricket Tournament began and led his ecstatic team mates to the jubilation of a tied match. In addition to that historic performance by Manoj, Mumbai‘s innings was devoid of any dismissals and it include a most unique occurrence, in that each of its 6 batsmen faced exactly 2 overs. Such a unique occurrence in this game only served to remind the spectators of the underling beauty, which this game of glorious uncertainty is capable of creating. In that final over with rising tension, excitement and pleasure mounting, Manoj rose to the occasion. As the man of that moment, he proceeded to demonstrate his cricketing artistry to put the finishing to an awesome and breath-taking tie between two cricket teams, whose players are the embodiment of the glorious tradition of the institution of cricket. In Galaxy’s bowling Rana gave up 11 runs from his two overs, Krishna conceded 12 and Man of the match Manoj went for 12 runs in his first over which ignited high hopes in the minds of Mumbai’s batsmen when they saw that he was the bowler at the crease, entrusted with the job of delivering the last over.

With the prevailing tension and excitement as the game unfolded to the bowl out stage, it was not surprising that Nehal, Vishrut Pathak, and Amit for Mumbai and Carbon, Rana and Manoj for Galaxy all failed to hit the wicket in the 1st. round bowl out. Therefore there was another tie in the match. The intrigue continued in the second round bowl-out. Nehal missed while Carbon hit and then Vishrut barely clipped the off stump bails to even the score. When both Rana and Amit missed, the score was 1-1 with the last delivery to come. The man of the match and creator of the drama Manoj was bowling the last delivery to determine the result. He held his nerves, when all those around him were losing theirs and proceeded to hit middle stump with a half volley fired in at its base to preserve the remarkable performance he produced in the final over of the match and brought relief to his nervy team mates especially his captain Krishna. Who started the match by opening the batting and leading from the front but ended it by leading from behind as he opted to sit out of the bowl out directing his assigned bowlers from the side line.

This was a memorable game of cricket. At the micro level Galaxy will be deemed the winner. At the macro level neither team was the victor or the vanquished. The big victor was the game of cricket at the “Indoor Format” in Morristown, New Jersey at ICUSA’s Cricketer’s Paradise.” The players of both teams, the match adjudicators, Mushtaq and Kawal, the hard working and efficient scorer Rachel, and the enthusiastic spectators created a spectacle of the art and science of this beautiful game of cricket which could only be understood and appreciated by the true cricket lover. An analysis of the recorded scores below reveals the story of this historic tied cricket match in the winter of 2008 in the U.S.A.
